Prague to Linz with České dráhy
I'm taking a ride on, shall we say, the unfashionable way to get from the Czech Republic to Austria. Most people probably go from Prague to Vienna, but on this trip I'm heading on the EC333 Jižní Express from Prague, through České Budějovice, to Linz.
Mind you, the train is scheduled to run right across lunchtime and there's a bistro on board!
It's been snowing a little bit in Europe, so there's a light dusting of snow to make this even prettier. So c'mon, let's hop in behind one of ČD's Class 380 locomotives and make that trip from Prague to Linz.
Departure: Prague, Czech Republic
Destination: Linz, Austria
Distance: 295 km / 183 miles
Duration: 3 hrs 46 mins
Average speed: 78 km/h 49 mph
Adult Single
1st Class: 748 Kč / £25.00 / €29,80
2nd Class: 310 Kč / £10.40 / €12,40
Date of Travel: January 2025
Operator: České dráhy
Motive power: Class 380 electric locomotive. Built: Škoda (2008-2011)

Hannover to Vienna in a NightJet MiniCabin
Переглядів 7 тис.День тому
I'm trying the NightJet New Generation Mini-Cabins from Hannover to Vienna. The Mini-Cabin is a modern variation of the couchette that gives the passenger more of a "capsule hotel" experience. Unlike couchettes, each Mini-Cabin is private and secure and yet it is still MUCH cheaper than booking a full-on sleeper compartment. But is it OK? Is it too cramped? Can you actually get in and out OK an...

If you want to travel from London to Amsterdam, then you have a choice of routes. you could always fly or take the Eurostar (with or without a change at Brussels). however, there's one really relaxed and time-effective way of making the trip, by catching the overnight ferry. As we'll see, you can leave London as late as 7pm and still be in central Amsterdam by 10:30 in the morning, having saved...

      @JohnnyHooverTravels You're most welcome - enjoyed it immensely; thank you ever so much for posting it as it reminds of the many times I've "done the Brenner" in a HGV; the autostrada/autobahn now makes it an issue-free traverse - much more fun on the old road, but only open to non-HGVs nowadays. I've been fortunate enough to use ÖBB often, but not recently so now the BIG QUESTION .... does the new RailJet still make the cute little tune that older RailJets do when they move off? (PS: it's definitely Europabrücke @ 16:33). .

    I note you used an Interail ticket. Knowing that some European train services are priced very keenly, do you consider Interail to be value for money?

    • @JohnnyHooverTravels
      @JohnnyHooverTravels 3 дні тому

      good question, and the answer is always "it depends". Advance tickets, especially can be competitive to a day's interrailing and, as you say, some countries generally have cheap tickets anyway. also, in some countries, the ticket seems competitive, but once you've added the compulsory reservation fees, then things are not quite so good (looking at you Spain and France). However, for flexibility it can't be beaten in many countries... so yes, "it depends" The Man in Seat 61 has a good section on Interrail (and whether its worth it), so I'd advise you look at his website. Thanks so much for raising the question and for watching the video too!

    • @barvdw
      @barvdw День тому

      @@JohnnyHooverTravels 100% this. I'd say in the Czech Republic, it's generally not really worth it, except perhaps for some of their night trains or international trains, but in Germany, Austria, especially Switzerland, Scandinavia, the UK, and if you're a spontaneous traveller, in France, Italian long-distance, sometimes even Poland... If you know months in advance what your plans are going to be, and book the advance tickets accordingly, it's probably just worth it in Switzerland, the UK and perhaps Norway, but if you like to go where the wind takes you, that's where Interrail can shine, as the price doesn't go up by booking last-minute, some rare exceptions not mentioned (Eurostar...)

    Another nice video. I spent the last 30 years working and flying everywhere, yet never saw the country I was crossing. Now making the most of train travel and avoiding flying as much as possible. I did the Cheb to Praha run and must agree CZ trains are some of the best (and affordable).

      There are actually two main lines between Prague and Cheb - Northern through Usti nad Labem and Karlsbad and Southern through Pilsen. Both are worth it. You can actually combine the two and switch in Cheb to make a full circle - great idea for a one day trip, if you really like trains.

    Another excellent video and full of information as you consistently provide to all your followers. The scenery with the snow just made it so beautiful to watch. I expect you have seen some of his trip reports, namely Pete Brandy, who covered numerous journeys from Prague to various places in the Czech Republic, some of the trains were extremely old, but still being used. Thank you Johnny. as always, for taking us along on this snowy journey.😊

      @@martinholland3938 it is very h dependent on which train you catch. The seat reservations can be as cheap as €3. It's worth reading up first on the Man in Seat 61. He has everything you need to know to get started about Interrail. But with a little knowledge and planning, it is wonderful!
